Northey Street City Farm, Windsor

Northey Street Farmers Playgroup is a delightful and relaxing way to spend time with your kids. It’s open to all ages and runs on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays*, though I visited on a Tuesday. I’ve heard that Sundays can be a bit busier due to the Farmers Market crowds.
As you enter the city farm, you pass a charming plant nursery and an outdoor community kitchen. On your right, you’ll be greeted by free-ranging chickens and a well-maintained community garden, setting a lovely tone for the visit. Once you arrive, you’re likely to meet Bob, a relaxed and friendly man known for his signature earth artworks. He has a calming presence that enhances the atmosphere. The first things that caught my eye were the organic clay-making and painting table and seeing the kids creatively drawing pictures on the ground with water on the dirt. It was all so sweet!
In addition to the usual sandpits and cubby houses, there were various toys scattered around, and the kids played harmoniously, likely due to the laid-back vibe. Nearby, the plant nursery offers delicious organic ice blocks, and if you mention you’re part of the playgroup, you get a discount! There were so many tempting flavours, but we went with watermelon while my friend chose coffee. One thing to note is that the area isn’t fenced, which initially made me uneasy given the nearby parking. However, once I saw how engaged my son was in the activities, I felt much more comfortable.
I also learned about the community outdoor kitchen, where anyone around at lunchtime (around 12:30 pm) can enjoy a free cook-up. Unfortunately, that timing conflicts with our nap schedule! Neither my son nor my friend’s kids wanted to leave, and I don’t think my photos do the experience justice. If you’re looking for a unique playgroup experience, definitely check it out—it’s free and doesn’t require booking!
